Simple FixeS eveRy CyCliSt ShoulD KnoW Bike trouble doesn’t have to ruin a ride. Since bikes are simple machines, many times the fix is equally simple. Put a Chain Back On: If your chain falls off to the pedal side, shift the derailleur to the littlest chainring and carefully turn the pedals by hand. The chain should re-engage. If it falls off to the inside, do the same, with the derailleur on the biggest chainring. Fix a Skipping Chain: Backpedal slowly by hand. Watch the rear derailleur. If it “jumps” you have a chain link that won’t flex. Find the stiff link by the “jump.” With a rag to keep your hands clean, gently flex the link sideways at the pin. It should unfreeze the pin. Fix Mis-Shifting Gears: Noisy, balky shifting? Backpedal again slowly while turning the barrel adjuster on the rear derailleur where the cable goes in. If the noise gets louder, turn the other way until the noise disappears.

Really Fix THaT FLaT! Ever replace a tube only to see your spare go flat? Stop multiple punctures with these easy tips: Check the Tire: carefully run your hand around the entire circumference of the tire inside, feeling for glass or metal shards that are stuck. Anything not removed will puncture a replacement tube. Check the Rim: sometimes rimstrips move, exposing spoke holes that can puncture tubes when they’re inflated. Line Up the Label: Align the valve stem to the tire label; that allows you to quickly find a tire puncture on the tube to patch it.
