Simple FixeS eveRy CyCliSt ShoulD KnoW Bike trouble doesn’t have to ruin a ride. Since bikes are simple machines, many times the fix is equally simple. Put a Chain Back On: If your chain falls off to the pedal side, shift the derailleur to the littlest chainring and carefully turn the pedals by hand. The chain should re-engage. If it falls off to the inside, do the same, with the derailleur on the biggest chainring. Fix a Skipping Chain: Backpedal slowly by hand. Watch the rear derailleur. If it “jumps” you have a chain link that won’t flex. Find the stiff link by the “jump.” With a rag to keep your hands clean, gently flex the link sideways at the pin. It should unfreeze the pin. Fix Mis-Shifting Gears: Noisy, balky shifting? Backpedal again slowly while turning the barrel adjuster on the rear derailleur where the cable goes in. If the noise gets louder, turn the other way until the noise disappears.
<a10:updated>2012-03-19T20:21:22+01:00</a10:updated>

iPaper Page 4

Follow Any Road Trek got its start making handcrafted road bikes. Ever replace a tube only to see your spare go flat? Stop multiple punctures with these easy tips: Check the Tire: carefully run your hand around the entire circumference of the tire inside, feeling for glass or metal shards that are stuck. Anything not removed will puncture a replacement tube. Check the Rim: sometimes rimstrips move, exposing spoke holes that can puncture tubes when they’re inflated. Line Up the Label: Align the valve stem to the tire label; that allows you to quickly find a tire puncture on the tube to patch it. Talc Your Tubes: Pro mechanics lightly dust tubes with talcum powder, which keeps them from sticking to the tire. They’re easier to remove and won’t “migrate” with the tire, which can cause a puncture at the base of the valve stem. Simple and straightforward singlespeed Bottle opener - yep! Fenders provide a clean, dry ride in less than perfect conditions Lightweight, strong frame for a smooth ride Get a Good Lock(s): A solid U-lock is the most secure, followed by a chain. Pair either with a cable lock for redundant security. Lock Everything: Use the secondary cable lock to secure wheels or a seat, if it’s on a quick release. Find Something Solid: If a dedicated bike rack isn’t available, look for solid, looped metal structures. Is It Secure? Check railings or racks for signs of loose bolts or other weak spots a thief could exploit. Be Considerate: Don’t lock your bike to a handicap railing or where it might block access. Mix It Up: If you commute regularly, find several spots to lock your bike; thieves notice patterns. Insure It: A homeowner’s or renter’s insurance policy may cover your bike, but check your policy to be sure, and keep a receipt and photo of your bike in a secure location as proof of loss. Also, some lockmakers offer insurance, but be sure to register when you buy the lock. HEAvy FEET, lIgHT HANDS Smarter travel with DRCV and Full Floater suspension Strong but light Alpha Platinum aluminum frame No matter where or how you’re riding, try to drive your weight into your pedals, not your handlebars. This better balances your weight over the pedals, and it helps you recruit your powerful hip muscles. SHOulDERS DOwN This increases your arms’ range of movement for bumps and turns. Set It, Don’t FoRget It Modern suspension is a marvel; here’s how to get the most out of it. Set It Right First: Every suspension bike we sell comes with a guide for setup based on weight, and a pump for air-based systems. This guide is your best first step in setup. Record and Experiment: Write down your settings, but take a ride expressly to play with things like rebound damping or even air pressure. Check It: Just like tires, suspension chambers can lose air pressure over time. Every few weeks, use your shock pump to check your pressure. Service It: Hard-working seals keep out dust, dirt and water, but need to be lubricated and periodically replaced. If you ride a lot, an annual service in spring will keep your bike running smoothly and prevent bigger repairs later on. We’re Suspension Experts. We can show you how to set it up and make adjustments that have a profound effect on ride quality. And when it’s time for more extensive maintenance, we have the tools and expertise to keep it working like new for years.
<a10:updated>2012-03-19T20:21:22+01:00</a10:updated>

iPaper Page 16

The Power to Go Faster CycleOps® believes inside every cyclist is a better cyclist. In fact, it’s enthusiast riders who might benefit the most. Here’s why: Definitions: Power is simply the amount of work done in a given time frame. We measure that as a watt, and coaches will also make reference to the total amount of work done in a ride in kiloJoules. Why Power Matters: You can’t fool power. Power is the only training measurement that is consistent and unaffected by other variables—terrain and weather, dehydration, fitness or the countless other things that can mess with heart rate, average speed or your sense of how you felt. Precise four-point fit Sprint out of the saddle on wide, sturdy frame Variable gear combinations for optimum cadence 400 Pro indoor Cycle The ultimate indoor ride. The 400 Pro is the evolution of a decade of knowledge about cycling performance. Replicate any race or ride ever captured on your Joule computer and do it again—any day, any season, any time. $2,899.99 What that Means: Power helps keep you on track to meet your goals. Modern coaching views training as an interaction between dose (the ride) and effect (how the body adapts in response). Because power is an accurate measurement of the actual dose of training, it can actually make your training more efficient. Do More with Less: Rather than trying to overcompensate for the lack of accurate knowledge, power training can keep you on schedule to meet your goals, when you want to meet them. No more overtraining; no more stressing about whether you’ll be ready in time for the big event. Just simple, trackable metrics that show your progress. That’s power all of us can put to use.
<a10:updated>2012-03-19T20:21:22+01:00</a10:updated>

iPaper Page 18

LiFetime WArrAnty On-rack application Saris racks are proudly made in Madison, WI, and every rack is backed by a lifetime warranty against defects in materials or construction. Here’s why wearing eye protection is a good idea on any ride: Cloudy Days: Clouds don’t block much ultraviolet light, the damaging radiation that hurts your skin and eyes. A 1994 Nature study* even found some clouds can enhance UVB transmission. Lighter-shade UV blocking lenses allow more visible wavelength light through, but still block 100% of harmful UVA and UVB rays. Low Light: On very overcast days, an amber or rose lens can heighten contrast in flat light. At or after dusk, yellow lenses increase acuity. Whether you’re protecting against windblown dust or a tree branch on a mountain bike ride, sunglasses are an elemental layer of protection for your sight. Wind: Even on a calm day, a descent can result in perceived wind speeds of 20, 30, even 40mph. Wind can cause blurry vision from tears, which could compromise safety. *Source: Cumulus Clouds and UV-B, Nature, September 22, 1994 Seek Fc Full-wrap flyer. Dehydration Matters: Lab tests have shown decreased endurance when total body water drops even three percent; if you don’t drink, you can reach that in as little as 45 minutes. Preload: We’re on the go, which means we sometimes start workouts dehydrated (especially if you work out first thing in the morning). Combat this by drinking at least 16 oz. of sports drink 15 or more minutes before your ride. Pay Attention to Thirst: Even a little bit of dry mouth is a reason to take a drink. Get Electrolytes: Hyponatremia (overhydration) is an imbalance in water to electrolytes. When looking at sports drinks, electrolytes like sodium, potassium and calcium are more important than calories. Fuel Up Postride: The first half hour or so after a workout is a crucial time to replenish electrolytes and protein to help repair muscles. One guilt-free, low-cost option? Low-fat chocolate milk. An 8 oz. serving can have over 100mg of sodium, 500mg of potassium and 14g of protein.
