It’s one of those places that’s sort of half whispered about among backpackers, nature lovers, and of course Lord of the Rings Nerds. I happen to fall into all of those categories, and my wife and I were richly rewarded by our decision to travel there during April and May of 2011. What we found there went well beyond our expectations of a lush green country and kiwi birds. We arrived in Queenstown NZ and spent most of our time backpacking (or tramping as the Kiwis call it) there on the South Island. There was one major difference between this trip and others that we had been on before. My wife was 4 months pregnant with our 1st child. Now you can imagine some of the looks we got when we told many of our friends and family that we were heading to New Zealand to hike for the better part of a month with Keely pregnant. “You’re going to do what?” was a common remark. It didn’t matter to us; there was no way we were going to miss this trip. My wife is one of the most amazing people on the planet as far as I’m concerned and I knew that she’d be able to handle it. After a couple of days in Queenstown we were eager to get out onto the trail and take in our first views of the backcountry. As we hiked along, fantails and New Zealand robins kept us company and danced along the trail beside us looking for insects in the litter of beech leaves on the forest floor. As we climbed up the valley the moss became thicker and at times I felt as though if I stood still long enough, moss would begin to grow on me. We met a family at our first camp, a husband and wife with their 2 sons. We were camping in our tent while they were making use of one of the many huts made available by the Department of Conservation. As we made our dinner we began getting to know them. They were wonderful people. We spoke at length about travelling, differences in our 2 countries and a lot about hiking with kids. Their boys were around 12 and 14 if I remember correctly and it had been their first big multiday hike. We were going opposite ways, as their hike was ending while ours was just beginning. That spirit was something we witnessed many times during our time tramping in New Zealand. On many occasions we met large family groups backpacking together on long trips and having a wonderful time. At times the kitchen area of the hut would be filled with their laughter. I began to notice these things much more than I have in the past. I knew that I’d be a father soon and I began to understand more than ever about how valuable the outdoor experience is to a kid and to a family. I suppose there might be no better gift you could give to a child than a love and respect for wild places. Keely on Rakiura Track Stewart Island, NZ by Rick Keely at Sutherland Falls Stewart Island, NZ Approx. 1,900ft by Rick Keely and I went on to hike and explore many areas through out Southern New Zealand. We found the country and its people to be of exceptional character. From crisp blue skies and vibrant green fauna to knee-deep mud and seemingly endless rain, it is a place of brilliant extremes. I only hope that one day I might be so lucky as to return with my son and show him the places that his mother carried him. On Cover: Rick is on New Zealand’s renowned Milford Track. Most of my time spent was on the South Island with one of my favorite places being Abel Tasman National Park. I visited in the month of September, which is late fall/early spring for New Zealanders. I was thrilled to find that Abel Tasman NP has the highest number of sunshine hours and is a great place to visit year-round. Within Abel Tasman National Park is the Coastal Track. We say trail, they say track. Its length is 52km or about 32 miles long. This track follows the coastline and has several Huts and campsites along the way. The track starts at Marahau, about an Entrance Awaroa Lodge, NZ by Chally Jeff at Awaroa Inlet Crossing, NZ by Chally 14th Annual Blake Croxdale Memorial Shoe Demo and Climbing Rendezvous October 22nd This is our favorite time of the year to get out and climb at the 14th annual Blake Croxdale Memorial Rendezvous. Following in the steep tradition for fall, the event will be held at Horseshoe Canyon Ranch near Jasper, AR. The date is October 22nd and five bucks will cover the cost of the demo, slide show and raffle ticket. Must be present to win. Our vendors will be there for you to try on climbing shoes and ask questions. All you will need is a valid driver’s license and be at least 18 years old or have a parent or guardian present. The demo will start at 10 a.m. and end at 4 p.m. The demo will pick back up after dark with a slide show by Lisa Rands from The North Face, to be held in the barn loft. Don’t forget, we’ll wrap up the evening with our awesome gear raffle. Proceeds from the raffle go to benefit the Blake Croxdale scholarship fund. Tickets are sold throughout the day for a dollar each. Tell your family and friends to come out and support a good cause in remembrance of a good friend and climber. If you have any questions, please feel free to contact Rick at the Pack Rat at 479-5216340 or Rick@packrat.biz. 14th M E M O R I A L S H O E D E M O & C L I M B I N G R E N D E Z V O U S trips on the Track are scheduled by the tide and a water taxi was needed for the return route of our hike to Totaranui. The Track is well maintained and easy to follow. We crossed Awaroa Inlet at low tide that morning and by afternoon the tidal rise would render the inlet impassable by foot. The crossing was marked with either large, round or triangle markers that can be seen from a distance. The markers were also used at sections of trail that exited beach crossings further into our hike. Another must do activity in Abel Tasman is Sea Kayaking. Our route took us one way kayaking along the coast with a trip out to the Tonga Island seal colony where we watched seals bask and swim. The water is cold in the Tasman Sea, so swimming for us was not an option. We stopped for lunch in a small bay, kayaked to Oneatahuti beach and hiked back to the Lodge in time for a shower and dinner. If you plan a trip to Abel Tasman, I recommend backpacking the Coastal Track. The terrain is moderate to easy and camping spots will be beautiful. There are no snakes or other predators to be concerned with. Water must be treated for Giardia and Criptosporidium so use a Micro filter or boil your water. If you plan to travel to New Zealand, be sure your hiking/tramping/running gear is spotless. Inspections are done upon arrival at the airport so that invasive species of plant seeds are not introduced to either Island. Check out this web site if you are interested in visiting Abel Tasman National Park. http://www.abeltasmannationalpark.co.nz “Hopara” (Maori language; to go about and explore) hour North of Nelson, New Zealand and heads north to Totaranui. The trail can be hiked point to point or as a loop. While in the Park, I stayed at Awaroa Lodge. Access to the Lodge is by foot, plane, helicopter or water taxi-there is no road access. The hour-long ride in the water taxi offered a scenic coastal view of the Park. FACT Icebreaker® Merino Wool Wonder what the staff favorites are? Merino wool from companies such as Icebreaker® is one item that comes to mind. Merino wool feels great on in all seasons and is easy to clean, with the simple instructions on the garment hang tags. Pack Rat carries several base layer styles, gloves and tops from Icebreaker®. Some of the characteristics of merino wool are high breathability, soft texture and good insulation; in contrast, traditional wool tends to be heavy and prickly. Icebreaker® garments, unlike other brands, have a “Baacode” located on each piece that will allow you to trace back the origins of the wool and its growers. Also Icebreaker® has strict guidelines for its growers to follow to make sure that the herds and sheepdogs are properly cared for in the New Zealand mountains. Coming from a youth spent playing competitive hockey, the lure of the mountains was simple: “You get to the top or not. There is no maybe, no doubts.” The 34-year-old full-time alpinist excels in virtually every style of climbing. His staggering tick-list includes everything from El Capitan free climbs and 5.13 solos to 26,000-foot peaks and bold solos and speed records in the Alps and the Canadian Rockies. “For me it’s most important to push my body to its full potential.” Ueli lets his accomplishments speak for themselves. In 2007, he broke the speed record on the North Face of the Eiger by nearly 46 minutes, sprinting up the 6,000-foot face in only three hours and 54 minutes. After a year of training, he returned to the Eiger and cut another hour off his own record. In 2009, Ueli reached the summits of two 26,000-foot peaks in the Himalayas. These climbs are a warm-up for a bigger dream: solo one of the world’s highest mountains. Patience is important, Ueli notes: “To climb something very difficult, you need to be in the right time, in the right place, and remember the mountain is always stronger than you.” Highlights » Speed Record Matterhorn: 1 hr 56 min » Speed Record Grandes Jorasses: 2 hr 21 min » Speed Record Eiger: 2 hr 47 min » 2009 Piolets d’Or Winner
<a10:updated>2011-10-12T19:58:41+02:00</a10:updated>

iPaper Page 8

Fully adjustable fixed hood Photo: ©Mark Gallup/The North Face Constructed arms-up articulation lets you reach upward without impacting mobility or the jacket riding up Windchill? The final regulations go into effect in 2012. use Broad Spectrum To truly protect your skin, use broad-spectrum sunscreens that block both ultraviolet A rays (UVA) and ultraviolet B rays (UVB). Only sunscreens that are proven to block both will be able to claim “Broad Spectrum” on their labels. » UVA causes premature aging of the skin and skin cancer » UVB burns the skin (any color to the skin is a burn!) In 2012, the highest allowable SPF will be 50+. waterproof No more No sunscreen can claim to be waterproof, sweatproof or a sunblock. Also, no claims of instant or immediate protection upon application can be made. Waterresistant claims must indicate how much time you can spend in the water (or sweating) and still receive the declared SPF. Two time periods are permitted: 40 minutes or 80 minutes. By far the smartest wool on the planet, SmartWool continues to enhance merino wool’s capabilities with layering capabilities for every occasion. So go, go, go! Why Layer It On? Layering’s primary purpose is to maintain an even body temperature regardless of physical exertion or weather conditions. During winter or chilly weather, this is vital to prevent hypothermia, especially when engaging in sweat-inducing or stop-and-go activities. next-to-skin (aka base layer) This layer wicks sweat away from your skin so it can dry quickly to prevent chill. For cool or cold weather, your base layer must fit snugly. If it’s not touching your skin, it can’t wick sweat. Serious shivering occurs if the sweat sits on your skin until it evaporates. Insulation (aka mid layer) This layer traps body heat. It can range from fleece and wool sweaters to fluffy down or synthetic pieces; it just depends on the season and personal preference. During high-aerobic activities (ice climbing, snowshoeing, backcountry skiing), store your insulation in your pack so your body heat can escape. Once you stop moving, put it on so you won’t cool down while your sweat dries. Shell (aka outer layer) Shells are like the walls of a house. By preventing, or in the case of softshells minimizing, wind and precipitation from entering they protect the micro-climate against your skin while allowing sweat vapor to escape. ON delegates are a diverse group of youth leaders aged 16 to 28. Over 1,000 delegates attended with thousands more tuning in online at OutdoorNation.org. “We’re back, and we’ve grown in both size and enthusiasm for our cause,” said 24-year-old Lindsay Bourgoine, ON’s lead ambassador from Portland, Maine. “We’ve also grown in resolve to find solutions to the national and local issues that are keeping people indoors.” The National Congress was tasked with drafting a statement of Outdoor Rights and Responsibilities to focus their attention on ways youth can address pressing national issues ranging from environmental literacy, childhood obesity, and the future of America’s State Parks (ON’s national partner and top cause). As a Lead Partner, CamelBak awarded micro-grants to delegates to catalyze change, funded product giveaways and fully sponsored three delegates’ trips. While in the States… » Check in advance if your destination accepts credit cards (and what kind) or cash only. Most off-the-beaten-path establishments only accept cash. » Avoid potential ”suspicious activity” by contacting your bank and credit card companies about your travel plans. » Use a dedicated checking and savings account for the trip—if an ATM card is lost or stolen, your life savings stay safe. » If using an ATM card, ask if your bank will increase the daily limit for your trip so you minimize transaction fees. » Countries vary regarding acceptance of traveler’s checks and specific credit cards (such as American Express). Check a travel guidebook or the country’s tourism website for information. » Exchange a small amount of money ($100) so you have some local currency on hand. (Exchange rates are usually better within the country.) » Pack a small calculator for determining exchange rates. » Learn the local customs for tipping and bartering. » Either invest in a travel wallet (waist or neck style) or keep your wallet in a front pocket with a zip or Velcro®-closure. Only take ID and items you need! once you’re there… » Avoid exchanging money in airports or at border crossings; they typically offer lower rates. Wool Doesn’t Stink Wool has natural abilities to absorb odor-causing bacteria, so you smell fresh for the long haul. Wool that Doesn’t Itch or Shrink Merino sheep are prized for their exceptionally silky, soft and itchfree wool. With thinner fibers than human hair (about one-fifth as thick) and other sheep breeds, Merino wool is comfortable to wear and easy to care for. Wool Regulates Temperature The “crimp” of wool fibers creates thousands of little air pockets that trap body heat when it's cool and release it when the temps rise. Wool Wicks Lovingly Wool fibers are hydrophilic (water attracting) and naturally odor resistant—they draw perspiration away from skin by absorbing it, then use the moisture to create a next-to-skin microclimate before releasing it as vapor. Wool is Versatile It can be knitted, woven or felted to produce a desired effect, like wind or abrasion resistance. Here are a few tips to help reduce your impact. Washing » Use the lowest water temperature— 90% of the energy used to clean your clothing is used to heat the water. » Choose the shortest cycle possible. » Load the machine to capacity. One large load is more energy efficient than two smaller loads. drying » Hang or line dry—it saves energy and wear-and-tear on fabrics. » Avoid over-drying your clothes. The fibers become brittle and break, resulting in faster deterioration. » Choose the highest temperature your clothes can tolerate and the shortest drying cycle. High temperatures dry faster and more efficiently. » Hang dry any remaining damp items rather than running the whole load again. » Clean the dryer filter after each use. A clogged filter restricts airflow and reduces dryer performance. Bleaches » Hydrogen peroxide is an effective bleach alternative. softeners » Never use softeners on products with moisture-wicking finishes. Softeners inhibit and potentially ruin the performance. » If you avoid over-drying your clothes, they may be soft enough without a softener. appliances » Gas dryers are preferable to electric. » Front loaders use less water, clean better, and are easier on fabrics. » Buy a washer with an Energy Star rating—it uses 50% less energy. rope Bag $45 Comfortable carryall. The founders of nuun (pronounced “noon”) pioneered portable electrolyte hydration after searching for a non-sugary, lightweight, easily dissolvable and carb-free product. Thanks to nuun’s competitive, athletic team, now every water fountain is a source of optimal, balanced hydration. So however far away you ride, you’ve got what your body needs. Nothing more, nothing less. nuun electrolyte tablets $6.50/tube of 12 tabs If you add electrolytes and flavor to water, you’re likely to drink 90% more vs. plain water—which is good. When refilling your bottles mid-workout, don’t just add water or an overly sweet energy drink. You need electrolytes, in proper balance for hard-working athletes, and a light, refreshing taste. Nuun delivers that, in a portable, easy-to-carry, fast-dissolving tablet. It’s simple: drop a tablet in 16 oz. of water, wait a minute, then keep going. » Easy-to-use single tablets dissolve fast » Formulated to balance hydration and electrolyte replacement » Light, refreshing taste in 10 flavors » One tube contains 12 tabs— enough for 1.5 gallons of Nuun » Consistent mix of water and electrolytes helps keep you cramp-free What it is » Four essential electrolytes: sodium, potassium, magnesium and calcium » Compact, easy to carry tablets » Fast-dissolving, no clumping » Fizzy when dissolving, but flat when done for palatability Courtesy of Nuun What it’s not » Sugary: it won’t upset your gut » Artificial Colors: Nuun uses vitamin b2 and beet juice for color » Full of additives: Caffeine? A drop of as little as 3% can decrease endurance. At 4% you can get heat cramps. And it takes as little as 45 minutes of hard exercise to drop 3% of your total body water. So drink up even on shorter rides. hydration not nutrition: Managing hydration separately from nutrition is a principle supported by important new research of noted scientists like Dr. Stacy Sims at Stanford. The concern is that carbohydrate energy drinks can slow absorption of water and food thus decreasing your performance. Try a drink with electrolytes but no or low carbs. two Kinds of thirst: Quench both types of thirst with a balanced hydration system. Hypovolemic thirst is related to electrolyte depletion. Osmotic thirst is related to the volume of water in your body. easy test: Weigh yourself before and after a ride. Try different products, flavors and formulations (like caffeinated versus decaf) in training to see what works for you. Everyone’s stomach is different, and only practice will tell you what will taste good and work when you’re going hard. Blend: Don’t rely on one form of nutrition. Use it all. » Chews or bars help keep your stomach settled and stave off that starving sensation. » Gels provide quick boosts of energy. » Energy drinks help keep you hydrated by keeping your electrolytes in balance so your muscles can fire properly. Schedule: The surest way to finish a day strong is to monitor your nutrition. » Start with a good pre-workout meal, an hour or more before you begin. » During the day, begin eating a half-hour in, and continue to top off fuel stores every 15-30 minutes.
